Uveitis causes over 30,000 new cases of blindness each year in the US.
Uveitis: is inflammation of the UVEA.
UVEA: consists of the middle layer of pigmented vascular structures of the eye and includes the Iris, Ciliary Body and Choroid.
Type of Uveitis
A. Anterior Uveitis: is inflammation of the iris (iritis) or the iris and ciliary body.
B. Intermediate Uveitis: is inflammation of the ciliary body.
C. Posterior Uveitis: is inflammation of the choroid.
D. Diffuse Uveitis (also called Panuveitis): is inflammation of all areas of uvea.
Many cases of uveitis are chronic, and they can produce numerous possible complications, including clouding of the cornea, cataracts, elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), glaucoma, swelling of the retina or retinal detachment. These complications can result in permanent vision loss.
Symptoms of Uveitis
1. Anterior Uveitis:
. light sensitivity
. eye pain
. red eye
2. Intermediate and Posterior Uveitis:
blurred vision, floaters, or seeing flashing light. typically in both eyes but are usually painless
3. Diffuse uveitis has a combination of symptoms of all types of uveitis.
Culprits of Uveitis
A. Infectious Uveitis: includes viral, bacterial and fungal infections.
B. Non-Infectious Uveitis:
1. immunological systemic disorder, i.e. autoimmune diseases and/or systemic diseases, such as:
. ankylosing spondylitis
. juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
. psoriatic arthritis
. rheumatoid arthritis
. HLA-B27 associated seronegative spondyloarthropathies
. systemic lupus erythematosus, etc,
2. toxins that may penetrate the eye
3. bruises to the eye
Why Uveitis can be effectively treated or cured by nano-grade eye drops?
1. Infectious Uveitis:
Nano-grade eye drops can effectively cure all viral (except retrovirus), bacterial (including drug-resistant) and fungal infections.
2. Non-Infectious Uveitis:
A. Nano-grade eye drops can effectively inhibit those mediators triggered by inflammation for initiation of Adaptive Immune System. Autoimmune diseases and/or systemic diseases are the culprits of non-infectious uveitis. If mediators of adaptive immune response can be inhibited, inflammation of uvea can certainly be treated effectively because immune cells won't deem self cells as foreign antigens and attack them.
B. Toxins are all polar organic chemicals. Nanoparticles of nano-grade eye drops have strong polarity, i.e. extremely high CEC (cation exchange capacity). Hence, toxins can be thoroughly adsorbed by nanoparticles and won't hurt normal cells.
C. Nanoparticles of nano-grade eye drops can help endogenous adult stem cells (ASCs) remove inhibitory molecules, so that their regenerative potentials can be turned on accordingly to repair damaged tissues.
Conclusions:
1. It is plausible that all kinds of infectious uveitis can be effectively cured by nano-grade eye drops.
2. For non-infectious uveitis, those that belong to Category A can be effectively treated by nano-grade eye drops, but cannot be cured. However, those that belong to Category B & C can be cured by nano-grade eye drops.
